The Summer Palace, Beijing, China
The Summer Palace, a site classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, is located on the western outskirts of Haidian District, Beijing, China, consisting mainly of Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake. The Summer Palace is the largest royal park in China, and is an archetypal Chinese garden. It is well known for its delicate architecture and design, and landscape.
Covers an area of over 290 hectares, with a history of 245 years. The first building of the garden began during the Jin Dynasty, according to the documentation of history. However, it was greatly expanded during the Qing dynasty. The Summer Palace was completed in 1764, and then called Qingyi Garden. During the invasion of the Anglo-French Allied Forces, the garden was severely damaged. Later it was rebuilt by the Qing government in 1888, dedicated to Empress Dowager Cixi.
