“Scottsdale – Myrtle Beach The Southwest” Without the Beach

by benny on October 16, 2009

I have been traveling to Myrtle Beach since 1990 for a golf vacation and great for the past four years with my golf buddies, Ferd, Fred, Tim, Dennis, Richard, Peter and Mike F. in our annual golf trip. Since this would be our 5th year we decided to try a new venue. After careful consideration of a number of alternative locations, we came to Scottsdale, Arizona, as this year golf destination.

It proved an excellent choice and we reserve our time there from March 18 to 22. We waited a reasonable time, as the week before our arrival, the temperature was high in the 70’s, which is perfect for golf. When we arrived the temperature was increased in 80, high and low 90, which is hot, but still playable. This is a drier climate that heat was not as formidable as in the north or southeast, where the humidity will make it feel much warmer than it is.

The courses played TPC of Scottsdale, The Trails, Gold Canyon – Dinosaur, Whirlwind – Devil’s Claw and us-and Ko-Pa – Cholla, my personal favorite. The rates at the time of the year were a bit expensive but worth the cost in the long run. The last three golf resorts each had 36 holes and we could return to play another 18 holes in their alternate course that was more pleasant and convenient.

I played golf in the desert before Las Vegas in 2002 as his holiday there with my partner this year to celebrate my 50th birthday, but this was different. The red rock mountains and varied rock formations and cactus forms, respectively, were incredible. The fairway grass against the backdrop of the Colorado mountains were impressive and I enjoyed every minute of the trip. We stayed at the Resort Suites Xona, which was located in the center and had excellent accommodations for a reasonable price.

The elevation changes during the dinosaur Gold Canyon was the most incredible and the views of some of the highest areas were magnificent. After golf every day the restaurant and nightlife scene jumping. We enjoyed the style Maggio’s Family Restaurant, which offers many specialty fish paste and the meat was difficult to choose and all you can eat price. Capital Grill also enjoy another of my favorites there.

The only disadvantage of this trip was the time of flight from Newark, New Jersey, which was more than five hours and I was sitting against the fuselage, no window. Always request a window seat when I travel because I like taking photos of aerial views of the mountains, lakes, canyons, rivers, beautiful sunrises, sunsets, and sometimes cloud formation and therefore this provision of the claustraphobic seats to say the least.

That normally go with a group of eight golfers, but the journey of my good friends, Ferd, decided to invite some acquaintances in San Francisco, Chris, Frank and Dave. He also asked another associate of the Philadelphia area, Richard, to join us and complete the quartet of third parties. There was some interesting golf jokes and camaraderie between the new guests and the first two groups of foursomes. We all get along well and golf, good food and good times was part of the course.

As great a time to be had by all who still choose Myrtle Beach as my first choice of places to golf, but Scottsdale, Arizona, is definitely a second. If you are planning a golf trip or vacation, you can not go wrong with either location. The amount of options for playing excellent golf and accommodation at the place or it is unlimited and includes many options for after hours entertainment.
